ChickenevisuEvisu recently launched their Dirty Dozen +1 project in which the same pair of jeans is worn by a new owner each month. The project starts with a pair of selvege Evisu jeans, hand painted with the traditional seagull logo (see the YouTube below.) Trend Report: Unisex jeans

April77Given last night's late night festivities at the opening of Supper Club's New York chapter, we needed something to take the edge off our early morning. Poking around at some of our favorite denim retailers, we noticed the prevalence of a trend we participate in more frequently than we should admit: unisex jeans. With girls stealing boys' jeans and boys stealing girls' jeans, labels like April 77 (above,) Cheap Monday, Tripp, and Levi's have finally gotten it right--all for one, one for all!

Yes, these jeans are usually very slim fitting, but are cut in the perfect middle-ground proportions to keep both sexes happy campers. Our everyday jeans are from Tripp. We've stocked up on their Jimmy Jean in just about every color and pattern thanks to legendary Jimmy Webb of Trash & Vaudeville for whom the jeans are named.

We're also big fans of Levi's recently launched unisex collection, especially the bondage-influenced styles we saw at the Damien Hirst show in September.

If you're looking for something a little more European, check out April 77 and Cheap Monday. Of course, all the great style icons, such as Charlotte Gainsbourg, have been rockin' Dior Homme's jeans for quite some time. Though technically not unisex, there's no arguing that almost as many women wear the collection as men.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Bow Jeans

GbubowjeansOne of our favorite people, Judi Rosen, of LES outpost, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, always impresses us with her directional approach to denim. High-waist trouser jeans? She did it first. This summer's shorts revival? She had somethin' to do with it.

We were so excited to see her latest: the Bow jean. Starting with her favorite high-waist and hugging the body all the way to the ankle, these jeans are like a corset for your lower half. Making them even more special is the bow detail at the top of each 11" ankle zip and the wide range of colors including acid wash and pinstripes.

If you can't make it to her LES location on Kenmare, pop over to the ONLINE STORE.

Fall '07 preview: Old Navy

OncollageOld Navy shipped us a preview of their Fall 2007 collection and it's nothing less than stellar. With trends following all the premium brands but at much more affordable prices, Old Navy has come a long way since polar fleece and Carrie Donovan.

Three new fits are being introduced to flatter every figure. The Diva  is low-rise and body hugging while the Flirt is more classic with a medium rise. For the trendy set, the Sweetheart has a higher rise and easy leg. At $29.50, you can try all three! Ontrouser

Our personal fav. is the trouser denim at $34.50 which can go to work with a blazer as easily as it goes to a show at Mercury Lounge with a wife beater and eyeliner. (Ok, so we wear wifebeaters and eyeliner to work as well, but you get our point.)On_colored_denim

Their colored denim range is primary friendly with cobalt blue, yellow, and crimson red. For those less bold, pastel purple and gunmetal grey  also come in the slim silhouette. At $34.50, this is a trend easy to adopt.

Denim gets Posh

Our buddy Andy at Denimology has two Victoria Beckham sightings, both in Superfine jeans. These photos remind us of our Jovovich-Hawk post--skinny vs. wide-leg.

Everyday people: David Singer for G-Star

David_singerOne of our favorite people (and designer of this site,) David Singer, gave us some insight as to his favorite pair of jeans by G-Star.

Denim Hunt: David, what brand are your favorite jeans?

David Singer: G-Star, definitely.

DH: What is it that makes them so great for you? The fit? the wash?

DS: Well, I'm narrow with slight hips and no butt, so I need something that makes me look slender but without looking like a chicken.

DH: We get what you're saying.Gstar_2

DS: They have a slim, straight cut which works perfectly for me.

DH: Any last plugs for your favorite jeans?

DS: Sure thing--They have great washes...when they don't go overboard.

Designer we love: Rick Owens

Ro_collageAs long-time fans of Rick Owens' dramatically draped knit garments, we explored a little deeper to find an amazing range of men's denim.

While Owens is a favorite with the Hollywood fashion elite, he maintains a rather low-profile living with his wife (founder of Les Deux Cafes in LA) in Paris. He currently produces mens, womens and furniture lines for his own label as well as acting as the creative director for furrier Revillon. Owens gained notoriety by winning the CFDA Perry Ellis Emerging Talent Award in 2002 and has since seen his collections on everyone from Ellen Barkin to the Olsen girls. Racking up even more avant garde points, word is Owens' Italian factory will be producing Gareth Pugh's (a former Owens intern) highly anticipated collection.

These many accolades bring us to his men's range of denim. Of course the fits are slim, but not forcefully cut skinny, and the washes follow the palette of muted grey, taupe and black as with the rest of his knit and leather pieces. While the pieces can be hard to find at retail, check out Atelier in New  York and Maxfield in Los Angeles.

What are your thoughts on Mr. Owens? Do you love his "avant grunge" aesthetic or do you look for more traditional pieces?

The skinniest legs; the skinniest jeans

The_horrorsWhile girls have a selection of trend-setting styles to choose from, the edgey cut for guys still seems to be skinny. Of course, this style is best left to musicians and their entourages which leads us to the Horrors. It's a bit unfair to give them the award of skinniest jeans(they clearly have the skinniest legs) however, they do wear the style to the extreme and do so better than anyone else we've seen. Perhaps being young, British, and in a band is the key to perfect skinny denim.

What do you think? Have you seen even better skinny?

Kate Moss: slim but not skinny

Vogue_kate_mossKate Moss was the first to break out Superfine's Frayed Misfit jeans and by the time your local Urban Outfitters caught up to her, she was sportin' wide-legged trouser J Brand denims at TopShop's fashion show. While editorials everywhere are raving of the high-waist, retro jean, Kate again breaks away from the pack in her slim-fitting bootcut jeans outside the TopShop offices.

We'll never disagree with Kate being on a best-dressed list, but what do you think of her hybrid jeans? Are they the perfect marriage of super skinnies and billowing wide-legged denim?

Is thin in?

Jovovich-Hawk showed both wide and skinny jeans in their Spring 2007 collections.

We saw Kate Moss in denim trousers at TopShop's Spring '07 show, and in her favorite Superfines on the street.

While skinny seems to be going strong, wider, more sophisticated styles seem to be creeping into the scene.

What do you think? Will you be rockin' your denims as tight as can be, or is wide-leg where it's at?

Mischa Barton: high-waist jean

Mischa_highwaist_1Mischa Barton was out and about in LA recently sporting a fresh take on the skinny jean trend. With a straight-leg cut and a higher waist, we love her leg-lengthing denim.

She paired her denim perfectly with a casual belt and cotton voile top. Casual, yet chic, dark washed denims and a breezey top effortlessly replace the legging and tunic trend. Mischa's a perfect example of why we're looking forward to Spring!

What do you think? Will your waistband be creeping upwards this season?
