J Brand has heard the cry and answered the call of those women who felt the irony of being thin but curvy; forever relegated to moving up a size to fit the thighs and rear, while wearing a belt to control extra room in the waist. They have created a line called the Blue Label which will cater to curvier women with waist sizes ranging from 25 to 34. While keeping with J Brands lean silhouettes and dark washes, the styles will be roomier in the thigh and snug on the hips (call it crack control). For now the line is only available in Bloomingdales or online but will eventually expand to other locations.
Walking into Rising Sun & Co's Pasadena store is like taking a journey through the relics of Americana. Mike Hodis, the owner and former designer of Lucky Brand Jeans, accomplishes this effect by displaying rare vintage denim pieces, some dating as far back as 1910. To add to the authenticity, all the denim is produced in the store. Selvedge organic and raw denim, woven on the antique shuttle looms of the US's oldest denim mill, are manufactured on turn-of-the-century sewing machines by expert craftsmen. The shop offers styles for men and women with prices ranging from $325-$500. The price increases north of $750 for custom tailored jeans.
Top Shop never ceases to amaze. First we find out they're opening up a store in New York City's SoHo and now we've learned they're moving into the premium denim market. Top Shop is going to launch a premium denim shop within their flagship store on Oxford Circus in London. The shop will carry such brands as Joe's Jeans, Radcliffe Denim, Top Shop's own Moto brand, Ditto and others. However, it doesn't end there. They will also stock limited edition "for Topshop" collections with brands including J. Brand, Ditto and Sass & Bide (pictured above). To top it all off, Top Shop will also open a pop-up denim clinic at the Oxford Circus location during London Fashion Week! There, designers will lend a helping hand to customers trying to find that perfect fit. The denim shop is scheduled to open in August and is sure to spread to other locations.
Coming right on the heels of the Glastonbury Festival in the UK, the Roskilde Festival in Denmark is currently in full swing. Today's set will include unforgettable performances from the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Gossip, Radiohead and Bullet for My Valentine. This year, however, the producers of Roskilde have gone beyond the music. Diesel has designed a pair of jeans, one for men and one for women, specifically for Roskilde. These limited edition jeans are embroidered with the Roskilde logo and are available only on the festival website or select Diesel Concept Stores.
Today, we're excited about the Los Angeles opening of Phillip Lim's third freestanding boutique . This gorgeous retail space will showcase his entire women’s, men’s, children’s, and organic collections — and accessories, too. Check it out this weekend!

Already, the buzz leading up to the debut of Topshop NYC is strong. The store isn't scheduled to open in SoHo until October, but a preview party was the talk of the town this past week. Now we can bring you a sneak peek at the Fall 2008 Look Book. We love the super high-rise denim in faded blue and the skinny acid wash jeans paired with a lumberjack plaid jacket. Get those credit cards ready now!

Tired of all those tedious fit sessions filled with unflattering fits? Head over to LA's Rogue Territory for a custom-cut pair of jeans. Located inside American Rag's World Denim Bar in Hollywood, the Rogue team will make a made-to-measure style for you after just three 45-minute visits. They offer a huge variety of denim fabrics and hardware and can even copy your favorite worn-out pair! This bespoke pair will run you at least $495. Not bad, since it comes with a guarantee to make you look great!
Converse is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year. These canvas kicks have been our favorites since we were kids and we just got a new pair for the summer! Check out the website to learn more about the history of this lasting brand, from their roots in Harlem music to NYC and basketball. Highlights take you through the birth and development of product to the customization choices that please today's tricky shoppers. Converse has a proven history in sports and fashion and has a relevance in today's fashion world, from sneakers to denim. While perusing the site, check out the latest from the Spring Summer 2008 collection from John Varvatos. We love the silver metallic skinny denim and the super-wide leg denim in a soft blue.
Last night, at the LA in-store party, we scored a preview of the Spring Summer 2008 line from Reiss. Aptly titled, Dazzling White Light, this season's looks are a collection of soft, whitened pastels with touches of calm neutrals. Of course, we were on the lookout for the key denim pieces from one of our favorite UK brands, so here is a shot of our favorite picks! Although the wide leg trouser was all the rage on recent runways, we still like these skinnier silhouettes for summer. The navy, engineered stripes is our wardrobe choice, but the alternatives also have similar zipper details that we like so much. I guess it wouldn't hurt to have all three!

Last night those of you based in NYC probably popped by the Buckler store opening. Not only does it feature Andrew Buckler's rock & roll-influenced basics, but last night Paris-based band, The Name of the Band is Rock n Roll performed in the newly completed 2,600 sqft space. (They were literally painting 15 minutes before doors opened.)
The Meatpacking District space is still open, though the Grand Street outpost will feature a higher-end selection of jeans, suiting, and accessories.

Start making your calls to see how you can snag an invite to the Earnest Sewn + Trovata pop-up store opening party taking place in one of their New York stores. The last party they had ended with the Virgins playing at Bungalow 8 so we can only imagine what happens tonight. Of course, even if you don't make it, we'll give you the lowdown tomorrow.
On the heels of their incredibly successful Repetto pop-up, Earnest Sewn and Trovata are joining forces to bring East and West together. Trovata's store within a store will be designed after their houseboat-style Newport, CA shop with the help of John Whitledge, Trovata's founder and designer. In addition to apparel, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for rare vintage books, magazines, nick-nacs and accessories. And of course, there will be a number of limited-edition collaborations in the 420 sqft boutique.
Pop into the pop-up starting January 9th at Earnest Sewn's Washington St. outpost.

You already know about the Earnest Sewn and Repetto collaboration but have you seen the latest organic range? Thanks to the help of organic denim from the infamous Cone Denim, and the partnership with design incubator, Barneys New York, Earnest Sewn and Repetto have taken their collection from the shelves of their Meatpacking District store to the masses. Two styles, a ballet flat for women and a jazz shoe for men, are made of 100% organic cotton denim with the only additive being starch in the construction process.
We just got word from our friends over at Diesel that they're launching their online flagship, Diesel Digital Style Lounge, today with over 1,000 items from the FW07 collection and SS08 preview. Moving forward, the merchandise will change seasonally featuring 18 key looks (50/50 mens and womens) with new products being added monthly.
The site features a full range of products including apparel, denim, accessories, and underwear as shown on 3D models twisting and turning to allow the customer to see how the fabric moves, and how styles look on a body, not just a mannequin.
Wilbert Das, who you may remember from the amazing hologram runway show project, also oversaw this creative endeavor with the in-house Diesel Creative Team. To guarantee exceptional service and customization, Diesel paired up with YOOX Group, famous for their designer outlet, YOOX.com.

WeSC, the Swedish wunder-label of denim and streetwear, has opened their first flagship in Paris. As long-time fans, we couldn't be more excited. Yet another reason for us to make a trip to the city of lights.
WeSC, ie: We Are the Superlative Conspiracy, is building itself to be a lifestyle brand, rather than just a skate brand.
"We're a street fashion brand built for life after skating. Paris is a tough market, but street-inspired fashion is still in high demand," founder Greger Hagelin tells WWD.
Both men's and women's collections fill the 970 sq/ft store along with a mezzanine devoted to Nike SB. As we reported earlier, the collection features a wide range of denim offerings including Japanese and organic denims. Look for bright colors and slim fits to hit shelves as winter approaches.
Stop by the shop:

We were quite impressed with the collection of denim shops our buddies over at Gridskipper put together. We'd like to add 192 Doves in Rubin Chapelle, National Jean Company, Famous Friends, and the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Check it out and leave us any additional recommendations!
Last night National Jean Company celebrated it's first store in Manhattan. The chain has been around for 15 years with concentration in Long Island and other suburban territories on the East coast.
The new store on the Upper East Side is 2,700 sq-ft and will carry up to 3,000 pairs of jeans from all the major players as well as some newbies like Brown Label. For now the store is only women's, but we hope they follow the example of UES neighbors, Forreal and Scoop, by opening a men's division.
Additionally, casual basics such as t-shirts and contemporary apparel will round out the mix.

One of our favorite people, Judi Rosen, of LES outpost, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, always impresses us with her directional approach to denim. High-waist trouser jeans? She did it first. This summer's shorts revival? She had somethin' to do with it.
We were so excited to see her latest: the Bow jean. Starting with her favorite high-waist and hugging the body all the way to the ankle, these jeans are like a corset for your lower half. Making them even more special is the bow detail at the top of each 11" ankle zip and the wide range of colors including acid wash and pinstripes.
If you can't make it to her LES location on Kenmare, pop over to the ONLINE STORE.
Topping our Wednesday night was a stop at An Earnest Cut & Sew's flagship store in the Meatpacking district. Last night's event celebrated the launch of Repetto's first US retail outlet. Hosted by Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, Waris, and Jessica Stam, the event was attended by fashion's most well-known faces. Cutie patooties, Cory Kennedy and Mark Hunter were there, as were Tinsley Mortimer and Derek Blasberg.
The pics above (excuse our amateur photog skills) are of the installation created for the gallery space, as well as a few of the offerings exclusive to the Earnest Sewn pop-up.
We can't wait to hit the Earnest Sewn event tonight, celebrating the launch of the Repetto pop-up store in their Meatpacking District flagship. This will be the first US retail initiative for the French label with Earnest Sewn featuring over 70 styles in 350 finishes in their gallery space.
Among the pieces available will be a one-of-kind Repetto Zizi jazz shoe customized by Scott Morrison, president and designer of Earnest Sewn as well as a number of celebrity-customized styles. To coordinate with the upcoming "Greencaste" collection, a line of organic products from Earnest Sewn, will be a limited run of Zizi and BB styles in organic canvas.
Check back tomorrow for more info. and a report from tonight's launch event.
Last week we had the privilege of meeting Sonja Rubin, one half of the design team for 192 Doves and Rubin Chapelle. We always have fun meeting the fingers behind the design, but this was the most enjoyable designer visit we've ever had; partly in thanks to the champagne, but even more so due to the down-to-earth, passionate personalities behind the brand.
192 Doves launched last year as a stand-alone denim collection to the gorgeously minimal, Rubin Chapelle line created by FIT alumni Sonja Rubin and Kip Chapelle. Drawing its name from the number of countries in the world (as of 2006,) and the global symbol for peace, the dove, 192 Doves illustrates how universal denim truly is.
Following Sonja and Kip's philosophy that denim is a very inclusive fashion outlet, we love the fact that daughters and mothers, sons and fathers are all fans of the line. Even more lovely is the lack of unneeded embellishment on each pair of jeans.
"Every detail should serve a purpose or come from a tradition," notes Sonja as she took us from waistband to hem on each pair of jeans in the new collection. Men's tailoring is immediately referenced with pull-up loops at each hip and bandanna print pockets. Depending on the style, there are detachable pockets, hidden coin pockets, and flattering off-pocket seams. Additionally, each seam is handled with couture-like triple stitching leaving the inside of the garment as beautiful as the outside. As if it couldn't get any better, each pair is crafted in the United States using the highest quality organic denim, and stamped with a discreet logo at the waist.
The lack of obtrusive branding, complicated washes, and finishes, bring denim back to where it should be. Simple and approachable.

While we were out, a fun tidbit made its way into our inbox: Earnest Sewn is expanding it's NYC presence and opening a second location at 90 Orchard on the Lower East Side. The 1400 sqft store which opens next month occupies a space that was formerly the visitor center for the Tenement Museum and a speakeasy during prohibition years.
Following the aesthetic of their Meatpacking flagship, the additional location has restored original design elements unique to the 1901 building. There will be industrial fixtures and artifacts from the early 1900s, and a handset tile floor dating back to 1906. Much as the original, the downtown sister store is being designed by Scott Morrison, Earnest Sewn's president and designer.
Much as the Meatpacking outlet shares space with a gallery style back room and espresso area, the LES version will feature a "flower shop" run by Denise Porcaro of "Flower Girl," a company which designs arrangements for clients such as Drew Barrymore, The Beatrice Inn, Bowery Bar, and one of our favs, Lever House. Following the lead of floral shops found in Paris, customers are able to have a custom arrangement or single stem in the same early 20th Century aesthetic as the designer of the store.
They're also planning to have a nightly video installation after store closing. No word yet on specifics, but we'll do our best to uncover more details. Check back next month for a full report on the store.
Check out ShopBop all week for the latest in fall denim. They also have a handy fit guide to help you find the perfect denim for your body.
In the mind of Carrie Bradshaw (I know, we're not really SATC kinda kids,) NY is full of "modelizers." Unfortunately, sometimes it's not so easy to bounce from date to date, let alone model to model.
That's where Diesel comes to the rescue. From now until August 26, Diesel has 19 models for your viewing pleasure online and in-stores. Each model represents a new style of jean available from the denim giant in their Winter '07 collection. Wait! It gets better. From Diesel.com you can even email each of the models, and as part of their contract, they MUST respond. We call dibs on Thanaz and we'll be wearing the same jeans as Clush. Isn't it more fun to link your friends to the dating profile of a Diesel model rather than a lawyer, doctor, real estate salesman, etc. found on all the other online dating services?
Get to it before your bragging rights expire!
Rather than set-up shop in the usual neighborhood of West Hollywood, Farmer Jeans took their game elsewhere--Los Feliz. They opened their first retail space last month filling the 1000 sq. ft. storefront with concrete flooring, dark-wood shelving, and remnants of the design process including patterns.
Of course, keep your eyes peeled for their signature denim designs for men and women and in the future look for their line to expand into the areas of t-shirts, outerwear, and like True Religion, a children's line.

Old Navy shipped us a preview of their Fall 2007 collection and it's nothing less than stellar. With trends following all the premium brands but at much more affordable prices, Old Navy has come a long way since polar fleece and Carrie Donovan.
Three new fits are being introduced to flatter every figure. The Diva is low-rise and body hugging while the Flirt is more classic with a medium rise. For the trendy set, the Sweetheart has a higher rise and easy leg. At $29.50, you can try all three!
Our personal fav. is the trouser denim at $34.50 which can go to work with a blazer as easily as it goes to a show at Mercury Lounge with a wife beater and eyeliner. (Ok, so we wear wifebeaters and eyeliner to work as well, but you get our point.)
Their colored denim range is primary friendly with cobalt blue, yellow, and crimson red. For those less bold, pastel purple and gunmetal grey also come in the slim silhouette. At $34.50, this is a trend easy to adopt.
With the success of yesterday's Five Questions for Five Pockets with Scott Morrison of Earnest Sewn, we thought you might enjoy the latest tidbit from DNR. Launching this week at Project in New York, Earnest Sewn will present a slightly less-expensive collection, Earnest I Am, of four men's and four women's fits.
Traditionally Earnest Sewn retails from $170-$285, while Earnest I Am will hover in the range ove $124-$148. Scott told DNR, "This new line is less for a jeans snob who wants a whole denim back story, and more for the younger guy who wants something simple, sexy and of good quality--something along the lines of A.P.C or the old Helmut Lang." He also notes, "This is about being inclusive, rahter than exclusive."
All five washes will be kept simple with men's styles including a straight let, boot cut, relaxed fit, and a novelty style. Look for a white leather back patch to distinguish the styles. While the price is a bit lower, the quality is not as Earnest Sewn is sourcing from the same Japanes, Italian, and Turkish mills used in their traditional line.
Cutie patootie, Faran, over at Fashionista gave us this little tidbit: Nine West is venturing into the world of denim.
Faran's fashion gals think they look like mom-jeans and have poorly designed pockets. Women who purchased them from the Macy's website are raving about the fit.
What are your thoughts? Can Nine West save itself from previous failed expansions such as the Vivienne Westwood, Thakoon, and Kokosalaki collabs? Or should they stick to what they do best; moderately priced shoes with weird sizing?
While we're still recovering from some 4th of July festivities, we decided to take the guess work out of shopping the web. Below find our top denim buys for the guys.

One of our favorite people (and designer of this site,) David Singer, gave us some insight as to his favorite pair of jeans by G-Star.
Denim Hunt: David, what brand are your favorite jeans?
David Singer: G-Star, definitely.
DH: What is it that makes them so great for you? The fit? the wash?
DS: Well, I'm narrow with slight hips and no butt, so I need something that makes me look slender but without looking like a chicken.
DH: We get what you're saying.
DS: They have a slim, straight cut which works perfectly for me.
DH: Any last plugs for your favorite jeans?
DS: Sure thing--They have great washes...when they don't go overboard.

After reading Jacob Resneck's post on Cool Hunting about his new denim favorite, The Rise and Fall, we had to check them out.
With all the hype around washes and cuts, The Rise and Fall, previously known for amazing screen printed t-shirts, take a very different approach. They keep it simple. Washes are kept dark and clean while cuts are straight-leg to bootcut. Best of all, prices hover in the $70 range--almost unheard of in an age of premium denim.
While they don't have large distribution yet, if you live in the NYC area, visit their store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

French fav, A.P.C. opened their first retail store in Los Angeles, CA last week to the delight of West Coasters galore. While A.P.C. has been a staple in New York's SoHo neighborhood, this is only the second retail venture for the minimalist design house.
While A.P.C. is best known for their simple, dark finished mens jeans, the store has plenty of accompaniments as well. Keep your eyes peeled for perfect knitwear and flirty but never prissy dresses.

In this week's DNR, Lee Bailey addresses some interesting statistics concerning who is buying men's jeans. According to his findings, men under the age of 25 have decreased their denim purchase by almost 30% yet shoppers ages 45-65 by an astonishing 27%. Maybes our dads are hipper than we give them credit for?
Bailey found a few factors attribute for this jump in sales. Mainly, this age group caught on a bit late but is catching up with the denim craze. Additionally, older men identify with jeans as with legends such as James Dean and Marlon Brando.
So what's with the kids? Apparently two extremes are pulling this age group from their faded blues. Slimane's slim suit trend with Dior has trickled down leaving college-aged men to purchase more formal alternatives while retailers like Abercrombie & Fitch have inreased the trend of twill cargo pants and track styles.
Will you be ditching your denim in favor of other fashion trends or are you buying various washes for various activities?
