Bejeweled Jeans

Img013

Fashion of the nineties began its return when we spotted shredded denim on the runway last season. Now we have another return from the decade, sorta. Remember chain wallets? Well, Earnest Sewn has paired up with French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels to take on that trend. They have created an extremely limited edition Zazo jean with the signature ‘clover’ chain. The ES denim is a high waisted slim fit with the gold chain connecting the front and back pockets, while the chains are available in two different styles, the mother of pearl and yellow gold and the black onyx and white gold. With only 10 pairs in production, they will be hard to come by…especially with the price between $9,700 - $11,300.

Denim Trend Report

Img009

Last week, Women’s Wear Daily featured a spectacular Denim In Depth special section. Among the business studies of the market , they featured some insights into trend direction for the season. We’ve pulled our favorites of the few and here is what we think is the most directional for premium denim brands.
First, we have Acid Test, highlighting brands from Gsus and Kill City to Vanilla Star and Denim of Virtue. Mostly cotton and spandex, this trend hits on the craze of ice wash denim of the 1980s. Once thought to be ultra-tacky, the sophisticated silhouettes and color choices (turquoise and red from Vanilla Star!) have revived this eyesore to be one of the most exciting returns.

Img010

Next up, is The Electric Company. There is a never-ending rainbow of color choices in denim right now. The key to navigating through them to make the right choice for your own style is to be bold. The most vivid selections from Blue Blood, Habitual, 4 Strokes and Jae’s D, are the most fun – and fashion should always be fun, especially in the summer! If the bright colors intimidate you, play easy and pair them with a plain white tank and simple sandals. These new colors are great alternatives to the regular indigo and faded blues crowding our closets.

Img011

Another way to create something fresh with the more traditional black and blues of denim is finishes. Many advanced coatings are being added to darker denims to create contrast through mixing the texture of the fabric with slick finishes. With this technique, you can gain something new without going out to the deep end of trends.
The Proportion of Blu offers a lightly coated faded blue, while Goldsign and Anlo apply this idea to dark grey and black denim. Goldspun has a heavier finish with added hardware on the backside for a unique design and Pepe takes it a step further mixing a black print under the clear resin finish.

Marithe + Francois Girbaud

Img014

The 'godparents of denim' are creating two new lines: the ultra-premium Legend and the retro inspired Le Jean. Marithe+Francois Girbaud have been innovators in the denim world for decades, but now have unveiled a new way to reach the masses. The Legend collection features lots of interesting hardware and pockets with curved hems, with many styles in wax-coated denim. Le Jean is dedicated to the 1960s youth culture of Paris, with high waisted silhouettes and slim fits. Breaking away from their usual designs and reaching to a new consumer base (Americans?) will definitely help this design duo hold reign.

G-Star & Cannondale

Cannondale

This is one collaboration that we haven't come across yet, denim and bicycles. One of the coolest denim brands around, G-Star, has joined forces with Cannondale for a new special edition RAW Cannondale.  The stylish result is part of their vision for an 'Urban Universe'. A place where riding a bike is a choice, where cycling is an attitude. The bike is a statement about its owner. Among the many exciting state of the art bicycles from Cannondale, this is a supreme design intervention.

Diesel Denim Gallery

4galleryshot_3

New York Design Week kicked off last weekend, but on Monday night Diesel took the reigns, to feature their newest collection of limited edition denim. The Diesel Denim Gallery hosted a reception for ARROJADA , an exhibition featuring the collaboration of Madridian arist Jaime Hayon and design firm Moooi. The unique stacking of functional items like chairs, tables, and mirrors express the collision of the commercial and natural world. The word 'arrojada' represents a vertically stacked cactus. DDG is continually merging high design and taste with commercially appealing products.  That's why we belong to THE CULT.

Jordache was a leader in fit and color when denim was first emerging as a premium fashion staple.

Denim Flats

Instylemagazine

This month's In Style Magazine features some denim flats for the summer. Ballerina flats have been all the rage and these add something a little special to the style. We always love to highlight denim accessories, but it can be difficult to match them with an outfit. Usually, it forces us to choose between showing off our denim trousers or sporting our fabulous denim alt-piece. Oh, the dilemma!

Look of the Day

Sart

When we are feeling less than inspired, we always head over to our friends at the Sartorialist. Here is today's reason why...a great example of the right way to wear wide leg denim. Most women on the shorter side find this trend to be challenging, but pairing it with a taller shoe and a shorter jacket is best. The color combination matches all the right tones for a style that is right on!

Happy Mother's Day!

ChmondayDamienNylon

In honor of all the mama's out there, we decided to feature Mom's Jeans today.  Yep, you know, those high-waisted, full-cut, tapered jeans that suburban moms everywhere call their uniform. Well, the thought may make you cringe, but think again. We've seen some interesting takes on this style from Acne Jeans and the latest collaboration from Warhol Factory X Levi's Damien Hirst. As an actual fashion-forward trend, we're not sure how far this will travel, but the styling seen in Nylon Magazine and by Cheap Monday's Spring 2008 line, is quite convincing.

What's new?

Wgsn

According to the Cotton Incorporated Lifestyle Monitor, the average woman owns eight pairs of jeans. Even with such a high ownership, three out of four female respondents say that they would likely buy another pair in the coming months.Innovation and newness are driving the women's denimwear market.
One designer accepting and meeting the challenge of offering cutting-edge denim is Alexander Wang. At his recent runway presentation during New York's fall fashion week he debuted garments treated with the STORM DENIM technology, which was introduced by Cotton Incorporated two years ago.
Choices and options remain important. While newness and innovation drive the market in denim at virtually every price point, most women embrace change in their own leisurely fashion. According to the Monitor, an outstanding 72% of female respondents say that they are not among the first to try a new style.

78 pairs and counting...

Chanelss_3

Emily Zak, Executive Retail Editor of Vogue UK, keeps a great blog, fresh with personal and professional fashion information. Her latest entry is a passionate take on her ever-growing denim wardrobe. Noting that some of her pairs are held onto for nostalgia, Emily says, "The fact that something so practical, and originally designed as workwear, has come to play such an important or even intimate role in women's lives is remarkable." We couldn't agree more. For some more insight, check out her full entry @ VOGUE.

Lanvin does Denim

Lanvin

Designer Alber Elbaz has revealed the new partnership between Lanvin and one of our favorite denim labels, Acne Jeans, to produce its first line of jeans. This is a serious dive into the premium pool.
"I want to bring Lanvin into their know-how," said Elbaz, in an interview with The Daily. "What if you don't want to wear a skinny jean? It's time to go back to a product that has a dream to it. I asked myself, 'What kind of jeans can I bring that will be a Lanvin jean and Acne spirit infused in one?"
The line is planned for 2009...get ready!
