Morrison steps down as president of Earnest Sewn

Earnest Sewn designer, Scott Morrison, is stepping down in his role as president of the denim giant. Michael Press, former VP of Paige Premium denim will be taking over while Scott will continue to design the collection. With the rapid expansion, we're confident this will only lead to bigger and better things for the company leaving Scott to concentrate on the celebrated simplicity Earnest Sewn has become known for.

Levi's does ProjRun

LevispatchAs you may have noticed on last week's Project Runway, Levi's is a huge presence in this season's competition. Of course, the challenge didn't end on the show. Up until February 6, you have your chance to redesign the classic 501s and trucker jacket that have made Levi's the most respected name in the denim industry for over 150 years. More right brain than left brain? There's a job for you as well. The winner will be chosen by votes cast on the site, www.levis.com/project501, with the top 20 being announced the week of Feb. 21 and the winner the week of Feb. 28.

Following the footsteps of their ProjRun competition, Levi's designers will give input and helpful criticisms on their blog throughout the competition.

In support of Project 501, keep your eyes peeled for a full-on guerrilla-style marketing campaign. Everything from napkins at your favorite bar to internet advertising in New York and Los Angeles's hottest design centers such as Parson's (Tim Gunn's old stomping grounds) and FIT.

Make it work!

BucklerstoreLast night those of you based in NYC probably popped by the Buckler store opening. Not only does it feature Andrew Buckler's rock & roll-influenced basics, but last night Paris-based band, The Name of the Band is Rock n Roll performed in the newly completed 2,600 sqft space. (They were literally painting 15 minutes before doors opened.)

The Meatpacking District space is still open, though the Grand Street outpost will feature a higher-end selection of jeans, suiting, and accessories.

Men's Runway at Blue + Collective

Blue For the first time, the menswear market will have their own fashion week, joining the ranks of Milan and Paris. Sunday, January 20 and Monday, January 21, IMG (they make women's fashion week happen,) and ENK (trade show giant) will partner to present four fashion collections at the New York tradeshow.

Why is this important? For one thing, it allows for menswear designers to distinguish themselves from the womenswear market and gain much needed coverage without being overshadowed by the women's collections which are constantly double and triple booked. Additionally, it aligns the brands with the menswear market where buyers are placing their orders. Normally this was two months earlier than any runway show and left the market disjointed.

Be sure to pop by and keep your eyes open for designers such as Andrew Buckler and Yoko Devereaux. We also hear Andrew is opening his second New York store which showcasing his rainbow flavored denim. We'll be there and will share everything you missed on Wednesday.

Meltin' Pot returns to Pitti Uomo

MeltinpotAfter an eight year absence, Italian brand Meltin' Pot is back at Pitt Uomo. The return marks the beginning of a 10 year strategy to increase the brand's worldwide market share. With over 2,000 retail outlets around the globe and 100 of those being in the United States, it will be interesting to see if Meltin' Pot's strategy works and positions them as one of the world's leading names in denim. They're on their way there; the US alone accounts for almost $3million in sales for 2007, only a small fraction of last year's over $88 million in revenue for the 40 year-old brand.

To kick off the brand's market plan, the company has updated their classic 5-pocket jean with a more contemporary "M" stitched on the back pockets. However, much like Italian powerhouse, Diesel, Meltin' Pot is expanding their collection beyond just jeans. 30% of the brand's line is now comprised of fashion pieces such as tops and jackets. Of course, Augusto Romano, the company's director, reminds us that despite the addition of fashion pieces, denim will never disappear:

"This is a cyclical business, but it's constantly growing and is part of our culture," Romano said. "There are no alternatives to this fabric in the mind of the consumer."

Blind Item: the highs and lows

Which high-waist pioneer is introducing new, lower-waist and slimmer leg styles to their 2008 collections? We're interested to see if fashionistas like Fergie and Gwen Stefani will be rockin' the new cuts or stickin' with the classic.

Fake Red Monkeys?

RmcWhile we love RMC Red Monkeys for their limited edition denim designs and collaborations, we never thought they'd be joining the ranks of Seven New York and True Religion in the fight against copycats. Unfortunately, there has been such an influx of fake Red Monkeys (think plastic patches and bleached cotton) that the designer, Martin Ksohoh, has shared a checklist to ensure that collectors of the brand receive a one-of-a-kind piece to add to their denim collection and not a cheap knockoff.

1 REAL RMC JEANS Must be made in Hong Kong otherwise they are fakes
2 PROHOBIT LLC ARE NOT THE DISTRIBUTORS OR SUB AGENTS for RMC for USA.
3 "AKASARU" has NO connections with the real Martin Ksohoh of RMC or RED MONKEY COMPANY.
4 REAL RMC JEANS Must have leather patch, not pvc on waist band
5 REAL RMC JEANS Must have individual lazer cut serial numbers on the patch
6 REAL RMC JEANS Must be made in Hong Kong otherwise they are fakes
7 REAL RMC JEANS DOES NOT USE BLUE COLOUR LOGO ON THE LEATHER PATCH ON WAISTBAND.
8 REAL RMC JEANS HAS UNIT PRODUCTION LAZER SERIAL NUMBER
9 REAL RMC JEANS Selvedge must be red and green
10 REAL RMC DENIM FABRIC MUST BE MADE FROM NATURAL COLOUR COTTON-UNBLEACHED (inside has yellowish tint).
11 REAL RMC JEANS DO NOT USE THE WORD OR BRANDING (AKASURA) ANY WHERE ON THE JEANS, LABELS OR TAGS.

The sweetest jeans

SugarcanejeansLiterally. Sugar Cane Jeans are woven with a unique combination of cotton and sugar cane fibers using vintage shuttle looms. The result is some of the finest Japanese selvage denim we have ever seen. Before we go on, it should be noted that shuttle looms haven't been made in over 40 years and result in the smooth, straight edge of selvage denim rather than the frayed edges of traditional, modern denim.

Taking it one step further, Sugar Cane is one of the few companies to master the dying technique of using natural dyes such as mud, grass, persimmon and green tea.

We haven't found a US distributer, but you can purchase them at Togged.com for around $400.

Diesel Fuel for Life limited edition pocket chains

Diesel_ffl_chain_f_open_smallWelcome back everyone! Now that our vacay and the holidays are over, we're back to our usual posting schedule. What better way to kick our return off than an overview of our favorite gift from this season. Sure, we loved Fuel for Life the first time around, but as we found under our tree, for the holidays Diesel released a limited-edition pocket chain vial of both the men's and women's fragrances. Sure the refillable cartridge is mostly targeted at the dudes on our lists, but we think they're the perfect alternative to those silly lipgloss pendents and rings that no one actually wears.

If you weren't lucky enough to score one for your holiday festivities, check out your local Diesel store, Bloomingdales, Saks, or Neiman Marcus. While we're at it; what was your favorite denim gift this season?
