23/501collection

Levisgraphic Hitting shelves March 1, 2008 is one of the most exciting collaborations we've seen in quite a while. The Jordan Levi's Collection brings together two American icons, the Levi's 501 and the Air Jordan. The men's only collector's set, called the 23/501 collection, features not only a co-branded jean, but also Air Jordan Retro 1 sneakers and a signature t-shirt. Best of all, you won't have to worry about tracking down each piece of the trifecta as they will only be available in a limited-edition set wrapped in co-branded packaging.

Jordanlevis_2The jeans are classic 501's constructed in premium selvage denim and lined in signature Jordan Brand elephant print. We're most excited about the sneaker protector at the cuff to keep the Retro 1's free of indigo transfer. Additionally, there will be a gold metallic button fly and the Jumpman logo embroidered on the pockets with the Jordan Brand name on the signature leather waistband patch.

Pretty hot, but as hard as it is to believe, it gets even better with the sneaker. The Air Jordan Retro 1's are constructed of Levi's denim and printed with the traditional elephant graphic design.

Mark your calendars and hit up Levi's in SoHo, NYC, San Fran, Santa Monica, and Chicago's Michigan Ave store to ensure you get one of the limited sets. They'll also be available online at levi.com. More of a Nike fan? The set will be available at select Niketown stores as well.

Brand to watch: Level 99

Level99collageLevel 99 is one of our favorite "under the radar" brands. Founded in 2005, they've managed to keep their quality high and trends at bay. As you know, we're big fans of classic, clean jeans and Level 99 provides just that. There's no forced celebrity endorsements and no sparkle and fade hype. Instead, the collection features timeless jackets and pants ranging between $108-$205 and can be found at stores such as Anthropologie, Fred Segal, and Neiman Marcus in the US. For those outside the US, '08's going to be a good year for you! Level 99's jumping the pond and launching distribution in Europe and Japan.

If they sound familiar, you might recognize them from features in Lucky, WWD, and Life & Style where we helped their readers find the perfect side seam jeans.

The Vault, Levi Strauss & Co

LevivaultNormally we're only jealous of people living in San Francisco because they get to enjoy chowder in sourdough bread bowls and tour Alcatraz whenever they'd like. But, now that the Vault, Levi Strauss & Co.'s permanent, public exhibition of artifacts from the company's Archives is open, we have a third.

Located in the first floor of their corporate headquarters, the 900 sqft space showcases everything from company catalogs to 19th Century Original 501(R) blue jeans. While you're there, we recommend checking out the clothing rack timeline of Levi's apparel, the poster collection, and the documentary on preserving vintage denim.

Keep your eyes pealed for our denim crush, Lynn Downey, Levi's company historian, as she and the Archives staff handle these unique pieces everyday in preservation of the next generation of Levi's wearers.

Dieselonline_storeWe just got word from our friends over at Diesel that they're launching their online flagship, Diesel Digital Style Lounge, today with over 1,000 items from the FW07 collection and SS08 preview. Moving forward, the merchandise will change seasonally featuring 18 key looks (50/50 mens and womens) with new products being added monthly.

The site features a full range of products including apparel, denim, accessories, and underwear as shown on 3D models twisting and turning to allow the customer to see how the fabric moves, and how styles look on a body, not just a mannequin.

Wilbert Das, who you may remember from the amazing hologram runway show project, also oversaw this creative endeavor with the in-house Diesel Creative Team. To guarantee exceptional service and customization, Diesel paired up with YOOX Group, famous for their designer outlet, YOOX.com.

Kate Moss in Diesel

Kate_moss_dieselWe were cruisin' one of our favorite sites, Jezebel.com, and saw this amazing photo of Kate Moss. Sure, she can do no wrong, but with all the skinny jeans, wide-legged jeans, high waist jeans, it's nice to see a good ole pair of dark wash bootcuts.

What do you think? Is it time to return to the basics?

Five Questions for Five Pockets: Lynn Downey, Levi Strauss

LynnWe already clued you in to the new Levi's book penned by Lynn Downey(left,) the brand historian for Levi Strauss. This time, we were lucky enough to bend her ear for a bit for our Five Questions for Five Pockets series.

1. What was your first pair of jeans?

I think it was a pair of Levi's For Gals beige jeans covered with orange flowers. That must have been about 1968 or something. I eventually graduated to 5-pocket denim, though when I entered high school in California in 1969, girls were not allowed to wear pants to school. We could wear pants in our senior year, 1972, but not jeans. So I would get home from school and jump into my Levi's jeans. I'm the third generation (at least) of my family to wear Levi's jeans.

2. Who do you think is the ultimate denim icon?

Well, I think I'd have to say....Levi Strauss! Anyone who invents a product that people are still wearing more than 130 years later has earned icon status in my book.  Other than Levi, I would have to name the anonymous working man of the 19th century as the ultimate denim icon: our first customer, the man who made Levi's jeans part of the DNA of America.

3. What are your current favorite jeans?

Ooh, my 525 boot cut jeans. Love these jeans, they are a fabulous fit, especially on my 53-year-old body. I also love my Levi's Capital E "Swank" jeans.

4. What denim trend do you wish would go away?

You know, I like all denim trends. That's because I love how versatile denim is, you can do so much with it, and I love to see how creative people get with denim, whether it's design, finishing, or packaging. As a historian it's a treat for me to work all day with vintage Levi's jeans, and then go out on the street and see the modern interpretation of the original.

5. What's your number one rule for denim?

Wear it everywhere!

Gustto does denim

GusttoAfter cruising the floors at Bloomingdales a few years ago, we were pleasantly surprised when we came across Gustto, the casual-chic handbag line. With their supple leather and oversized rivet details, they were the perfect unstructured, structured bag. Today we learned they will be expanding their collection to feature denim when it hits shelves this coming spring.

Gustto Denim Couture will retail for $280-$360 and has already been picked up by Kitson and Revolve.com. The collection features three groups named after towns in Sardinia . Cervo will target more fashion-forward girls, Pevero is a bit more casual, and Romanzzion features a higher waist and wider leg.

Agathe Planchon, Gustto's founder, spent over a year working with Japanese denim mills to create gold and silver-flecked denim to distinguish herself from other brands. She notes this is the European in her and she was looking to create something special that other brands don't have.

The cuts we've seen look great, but we're a bit apprehensive of the metallic denim. As you've noticed, we're purists around here.
