Trend Report: Unisex jeans

April77Given last night's late night festivities at the opening of Supper Club's New York chapter, we needed something to take the edge off our early morning. Poking around at some of our favorite denim retailers, we noticed the prevalence of a trend we participate in more frequently than we should admit: unisex jeans. With girls stealing boys' jeans and boys stealing girls' jeans, labels like April 77 (above,) Cheap Monday, Tripp, and Levi's have finally gotten it right--all for one, one for all!

Yes, these jeans are usually very slim fitting, but are cut in the perfect middle-ground proportions to keep both sexes happy campers. Our everyday jeans are from Tripp. We've stocked up on their Jimmy Jean in just about every color and pattern thanks to legendary Jimmy Webb of Trash & Vaudeville for whom the jeans are named.

We're also big fans of Levi's recently launched unisex collection, especially the bondage-influenced styles we saw at the Damien Hirst show in September.

If you're looking for something a little more European, check out April 77 and Cheap Monday. Of course, all the great style icons, such as Charlotte Gainsbourg, have been rockin' Dior Homme's jeans for quite some time. Though technically not unisex, there's no arguing that almost as many women wear the collection as men.

Too cool for school

InternetWe get a lot of questions about how we find out the latest and greatest in the denim industry. There are a couple of answers.

1. We know everyone! (Well, just about.) There are so many amazing people in the denim industry who have been large supporters of the site and without them we wouldn't have nearly as many story ideas.

2. The network of amazing trendspotting sites which is what this post is all about! Find a few of our favorites below and feel free to drop us a note with where you find inspiration online.

High Snobiety

www.HighSnobiety.com

We wish we were as cool as the kids on this site. If limited-edition Gor-tex Nike SBs are your thing, you'll be perfectly at home. Keep your eyes peeled for lots of Japanese denim.

Cool Hunting

www.CoolHunting.com

The online meca of cool. With posts ranging from the latest performance art in China to the latest organic foods to hit shelves, this site runs the gamut. As far as denim is concerned, look for all the big Euro players such as Diesel and APC.

NotCot and NotCouture

www.NotCot.com

www.NotCouture.com

Both of these sites are part of the NotCot empire. The main site is a landing page for all the sites in the network such as NotCouture and Tastespotting. NotCouture is our favorite jump off with posts ranging from gold leafed quail egg necklaces to classic peacoats. Be sure not to miss their sporadic giveaways from brands like Kasil.

Lou Doillin + Lee Cooper= <3

Ldss08Lou Doillon, model and daughter of legendary fashion icon, Jane Birkin, has partnered with British brand, Lee Cooper for a three year collaboration.

"Like everyone, I've had loads of denim in my time, but being asked to design my own range of clothes with Lee Cooper is a really exciting challenge. It's an opportunity to take a material everyone knows, and treat it in ways that nobody would ever expect," says Doillon of the collection.

J'aime WeSC

Wesc_paris WeSC, the Swedish wunder-label of denim and streetwear, has opened their first flagship in Paris. As long-time fans, we couldn't be more excited. Yet another reason for us to make a trip to the city of lights.

WeSC, ie: We Are the Superlative Conspiracy, is building itself to be a lifestyle brand, rather than just a skate brand.

"We're a street fashion brand built for life after skating. Paris is a tough market, but street-inspired fashion is still in high demand," founder Greger Hagelin tells WWD.

Both men's and women's collections fill the 970 sq/ft store along with a mezzanine devoted to Nike SB. As we reported earlier, the collection features a wide range of denim offerings including Japanese and organic denims. Look for bright colors and slim fits to hit shelves as winter approaches.

Whitley Kros SS08

Wkss08 LA Fashion Week sure has stepped it up this year. The schedule is full, celebs are making the trek to Culver City, and so are the editors. One of our favorite new lines to launch at LA Fashion Week is Whitley Kros, the collaboration between Marissa Ribisi and Sophia Banks. Yes, that last name means she's related to Giovanni Ribisi--she's his twin! While at first we were attracted to the line because we're HUGE Beck fans, (he's Marissa's husband and DJ'd the show) our insider buddies kept telling us how stellar the event was going to be. With our friends at FabSugar going nuts for the collection, and a front-row staked with Jason Lee, Juilette Lewis, and Jamie Presley, who are we to argue.

Marissa and Sophia showed denim in a variety of colors and silhouettes. Our favorites include the ankle-cinched and the dark straight-leg styles, but we're begging for the white jeans with alphabet print detail on the hips.

Be sure to stop by their just launched website for more info: Whitley Kros

Supreme's Erin Magee launches MadeMe

MademeErin Magee is our new hero. Her new line, MadeMe, hit shelves earlier this month, and we can't get enough. She perfectly translates men's streetwear into sexy womenswear. No, not the short-skirt, low-neck kind of sexy. The slouchy jeans, Hanes wife-beater kind of sexy. Of course, it's no surprise Magee is able to easily transform our favorite skaterkid's style into our own--she's the production manager for Supreme and previously managed the amazing Kim Jones/Umbro collab.

Obviously our favorite elements are her jeans. The Up-hi and the Down-lo. The Up-hi is made of light denim with a wider leg and contoured waist and hips while the Down-lo has an exaggerated waistband and deepened yoke for that perfect "I stole these off my boyfriend's floor" style. Additionally, take a peek at her super soft t-shirts and our dream item, the leather bomber.

Want more? Check out MadeMe on KarmaLoop or at one of our favorite boutiques, Valley on the LES

National Jean Company hits Manhattan

NjcLast night National Jean Company celebrated it's first store in Manhattan. The chain has been around for 15 years with concentration in Long Island and other suburban territories on the East coast.

The new store on the Upper East Side is 2,700 sq-ft and will carry up to 3,000 pairs of jeans from all the major players as well as some newbies like Brown Label. For now the store is only women's, but we hope they follow the example of UES neighbors, Forreal and Scoop, by opening a men's division.

Additionally, casual basics such as t-shirts and contemporary apparel will round out the mix.

Chanel SS08

Chanelss08Now that we've recovered from our party, it's time to recap some of the Paris, Milan, and London shows. Of course, the big standout was Karl Lagerfeld's collection at Chanel. He had previously celebrated denim in his couture collection with gloves and leggings of the slimmest denim we've ever seen. We're happy to see Karl taking his love of denim from couture to ready-to-wear and of course his Lagerfeld line.

Our favorite highlights include the denim bikini shown on Gemma and Irina's jeans trimmed in classic Chanel tweed.

DenimHunt.com Party Photos!

Thank you to everyone at Diesel, Hennessy, Belvedere, NYLON, and Don Hill's for all their support of last night's DenimHunt.com launch party.  The Ruff Kids did an amazing job with the tunes and the drinks kept flowin'. As we were too busy mingling (and dancing,) we had our favorite photog, Brad Walsh, snap some pics. Enjoy!

Galliano: children's designer?

JgcollageWe didn't want to be nosey and ask all our friends and party partners at Diesel why they crossed the pond this week. Luckily, Vogue UK gave us the skinny. King of the avant garde, John Galliano, has just signed with the denim giant on a five year contract to design the Diesel children's collection. Considering Galliano routinely plays dress up in everything from astronaut to matador costumes, we're confident that he understands exactly what kids are looking for.

"The premium world is generally booming, so it's no surprise that it also touches the kidswear business, a market which has been experiencing amazing growth year-on-year," Diesel chief Renzo Rosso told WWD."

We find this news quite fitting as we just completed an article tracking the trends in the children's premium denim market for an upcoming website. Besides, isn't everything always cuter in mini?

CORRECTION: In the words of Missy Elliot, "flip it and reverse it." Galliano's children's line is being produced and distributed by Diesel; he's not designing a Diesel line.

DenimHunt launch party

DhbloginviteRemember that party we gave you the heads up about? Well, it's only a week away and thanks to our favorite people at Diesel, Hennessy, and Belvedere, it's going to be the most fun you've ever had on a Tuesday night!

At the legendary Don Hill's, we'll have the Ruff Kids spinning all night, open Belvedere and Hennessy, and an amazing installation courtesy of Diesel.

How do you get there, you ask? Just RSVP to: DenimHuntRSVP@gmail.com by noon on October 9. Be sure to include your full name and affiliation. And yes, we consider "being awesome" an acceptable affiliation.

Italia Independent does denim

IilapoIt's no secret that we're huge fans of Lapo Elkann. This time around we are happy to announce his product line, Italia Independent, launched additional items this past week in Milan. Other than providing Lapo with plenty of photo ops, the line looks truly innovative. Previously comprised exclusively of space-age carbon fiber sunglasses, the collection now offers duffel bags made of Kevlar, canldesticks (shown above,) and a series of artist-designed fabric vases. Of course, what we're most excited about are his cotton/linen blend jeans. Iijeans_4

The jeans are made on a handloom with details such as hand carved horn buttons evoking the spirit of screen star Steve McQueen. Coming in around 300 euros, they balance the fine line of affordable luxury.
